  • Do not take antibiotics prescribed for another patient
  • Take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed
  • Throw away any antibiotics left after you have finished the treatment

The World Health Organization 2014 report, regarding antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance, shows that antibiotic resistance is not a threat for the future, it is happening NOW. Minor injuries and common infections have started to kill and the world is heading towards a post antibiotic era.

Some countries have reported multiple cases with resistance to gonorrhea, which untreated, can lead to serious complications such as infertility, neonatal blindness and adverse pregnancy outcomes. There is Life After Breast Cancer Fight For It!

Whenever we hear or read the word “cancer” we inevitably say in our minds ‘God forbid!’ and think about the health of our family, the close ones and, of course, ourselves.

Unfortunately, cancer can happen to each and anyone of us, even if we stay away from dangerous food, do sports and live, what we call, a healthy life. As October is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month let’s tap into this subject a little.

When we think about cancer, we connect it with death.  However, only if detected in a later stage cancer is deadly, so  let’s not associate death with cancer. The only thing we have to do is to be careful at the symptoms and detect the cancer as early as possible. Do not choose ignorance!

Common Breast Cancer symptoms:

  • A rash around (or on) one of the nipples
  • A lump in a breast
  • Pitting or redness of the skin of the breast; like the skin of an orange
  • An area of thickened tissue in a breast
  • A pain in the armpits or breast that does not seem to be related to the menstrual period
  • The nipple-skin or breast-skin may have started to peel, scale or flake
  • The size or the shape of the breast changes
  • The nipple changes in appearance; it may become sunken or inverted
  • One of the nipples has a discharge; sometimes it may contain blood

If you have any of these symptoms, you should immediately see your doctor and take the appropriate diagnostic tests: breast exam, X-ray (mammogram), 2D combined with 3D mammograms, breast ultrasound, biopsy or breast MRI scan.

Stem Cells: The Best Bone Marrow Transplant

The best bone marrow transplant is still a topic under analysis. We know now that this type of transplant is a surgical procedure used to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells. But what does it involve and how can we choose the method that is best in bone marrow transplant? Below you will find some pro’s and con’s.

Hematopoietic stem cells can restore all the cells types in the blood, used as treatment for diseases such as multiple myeloma or leukemia. They can come either from the marrow of a donor’s hip bone, or indirectly from the donor’s blood after a drug pushes the stem cells out of the bone marrow.

Most hematopoietic stem cell transplants use the indirect method of obtaining the stem cells. Yet there is not enough data to say for certain that one or the other method fits best for the best patient outcomes. A couple of years back, a study was released addressing this question.

The study found no significant difference. The overall survival rate was at two years, and no difference was found in the relapse rates but there was a higher rate of chronic GVHD with the use of blood stem cells. The disease is a difficult and sometimes deadly complication for this type of transplant. It involves damage for the recipient’s new immune system upon the liver, skin and digestive system. Apparently, this was an issue that made doctors opt for the first as the best bone marrow transplant.

The finding generated serious discussion among leaders in the transplant field about whether bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation is a better treatment option.

The study for the best bone marrow transplant options only enrolled patients with myelodysplastic syndrome and acute leukemia. It excluded patients with lymphoma or myeloma. Ages included children, adults up to 60.
