Diabetes Type 2 and Obesity-Two Preventable Problems

July 24, 2014 § Leave a comment

Obesity is mainly caused in many cases by bad eating habits. Obesity and stress lead to the onset of Diabetes Type 2, as researchers have seen, reducing the lifespan of the obese diabetic. But what if we could treat and prevent all these problems? Scientists and researchers have been analyzing and debating over the right course of action and the underlying causes to be addressed by decision makers to tackle diabetes type 2 in the obese. The solution is already available both for treatment and prevention. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 there more than 2.1 billion overweight and obese in the world. What are we doing wrong?

Why obesity causes diabetes type2

Being overweight is stressful enough, you get your average mockery among friends and life is not any better on the street either. However the stress of obesity at a cellular level explains why the incidence of diabetes Type 2 is more prevalent in the obese.

Diabetes Type 2 in Obese Individuals

Insulin helps cells to take up glucose from the bloodstream, storing it and convert it to energy for the body. According to Associate Professor Matthew Watt, leader of a research team at Monash University in Australia, in the obese individuals the liver and muscles become desensitized to insulin due to a protein secreted by fat cells. In an attempt to fix this problem, the cells being deprived of insulin – a message is sent to the pancreas to produce more insulin because the first batch didn’t get to the cells. Thus the pancreas goes into overdrive, eventually slowing down and stopping insulin production.

Two more researchers got to the same conclusion, yet with two other proteins: Resistin protein researched by Morris F. White, Ph.D., of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, and Endoplasmic reticulum studied by Dr. Gokhan Hotamisligil, professor of genetics at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Psychological Stress of Obesity. Related to Cause of Diabetes Type 2

Even if still in its infancy, the study of stress connected to various diseases such as cancer and diabetes is very real. According to a 2010 study from the Center of Research on Psychology in Somatic Diseases (CoRPS) in the Netherlands, emotional stress and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus are linked.

The results suggest that not only depression and emotional stress are associated with an increased risk for the development of type 2 diabetes but also anxiety, sleeping problems, anger, and hostility.

Prevent Obesity and Diabetes with Brown Fat

Many obese diabetics or just the obese might say they get fat even from drinking water, yet the whole scientific community has done the math and came up with an amazing find that is unfortunately disregarded or just not reaching the ears of the ones who should take action. The major find was in the diet and lifestyle of the obese.

Even if each individual has a slightly different process (slower or faster) when it comes to digestion and storing fat, we usually adapt to the lifestyle and food that we have available and put on our tables.

Healthy Food for Each Region

It’s that simple – yet that hard! Nutritionists support the idea of eating foods that were grown in the area you live in. The food on the dinner table will differ if you live in New York, in Colombia, Kenya, Russia or Australia yet the same rules will apply:

If our homo sapiens ancestors processed the energy and fat from food that was locally grown (meat and vegetables) these can be the key to the proper functioning of our bodies as well. You can, however, indulge in an African dark chocolate or sushi and other not-local products from time to time, just bear in mind that processed food consumption has never been supported by specialists in nutrition.

Furthermore, the recent finding about the brown fat effect on the diminishing of white fat is gaining momentum. Scientists have shown that the two type of fat have separate functions: Brown fat generates heat by burning calories. White fat on the other hand is the result of the body’s mechanism of storing excess calories. Yet the miracle brown fat (currently under promising research) is also referred to as the ”good fat” because researchers say it might play a key role in keeping people fit. Since the first studies were published on the subject even if it sparked some controversies, the benefits of exercise to produce brown fat that in turn diminishing white fat are quite popular. Furthermore, obese individuals have less brown fat than fit people.

Brown fat vs white fat benefits image

As far as the saturated fat is concerned– this compound of processed food has been mistakenly blamed for the extra white fat on our bodies for ages, while for the past ten years the researchers have debunked this myth – most processed foods contain both saturated fat and high carb levels thus all these combined factors are adding inches to the waist and thighs.

Conclusions:

You too can live a longer and a happier life if you make a minimal effort to upgrade your fridge with healthy foods that are in sync with the area you live in. Gastric surgery and SGIT metabolic surgery are a last resort to tackle both obesity and diabetes but you needn’t let it get to that extreme point.
